While that price tag might seem outrageous, Mark Hughes doesn’t dismiss the core of the story.
“Not sure about the price tag, it sounds like one of those made-up newspaper headlines where they sit around and decide how much it should be and then decide that’s what it is,” he said.
However, he made it clear that the rumor itself carries weight.
“The idea of Max Verstappen to Aston I think is very real and if what we’re hearing on the grapevine is true, those negotiations are ongoing.
“So even before we started hearing these rumours from within the paddock and not just from people speculating on it from the outside, it did make perfect sense.”
Why Verstappen and Aston Martin Could Be the Perfect Match
Hughes provided insight into why such a blockbuster move makes sense for both parties.
Verstappen has been at Red Bull for a decade, cementing himself as one of the most dominant drivers in F1 history.
But with a new regulatory era beginning in 2026 and Adrian Newey—the architect of many Red Bull championship cars—reportedly joining Aston Martin, Verstappen could see this as an ideal time for a fresh challenge.
“Max has been at Red Bull for a decade, it’s a new formula, a new engine partner, Adrian Newey has gone,” Hughes added.
“Max has won multiple world titles and said that only the first one really matters to him and the rest have been a nice indulgence.
“So he's clearly ready for a new challenge just the time that Lawrence Stroll has brought this incredible array of talents and facilities together and has taken Honda with whom Verstappen and has a great relationship already, with them.
“It's the obvious next step for both parties I'd say so yes, I'd put quite a lot of weight behind the rumours.”
Mike Krack’s High Praise for Verstappen
Adding further intrigue, Aston Martin chief trackside officer Mike Krack recently showered Verstappen with praise, particularly for his 2024 championship-winning campaign.
“This year’s [title] was probably the best we have seen from him,” Krack told RacingNews365.

Krack highlighted Verstappen’s dominance in a car that, in his view, wasn’t always the strongest on the grid.
His performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix stood out as a defining moment. Starting 17th on a rain-soaked grid, Verstappen carved through the field and won by a staggering 30 seconds.
“Brazil was a masterpiece,” Krack said. “There was basically not much overtaking, even in the wet, but he just went through the field and left them all behind.
“It’s nice to see that there is a very high level of driving in Formula 1, but then there is something extra with some champions, and Verstappen has that.”

Aston Martin, led by billionaire Lawrence Stroll, has made no secret of its ambitions to become a championship-winning team.
