Palou clinches Indy road course win – leads championship

0 1

Reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou dominated the Sonsio Grand Prix at Indianapolis, leading from lap 45 to claim a convincing victory.

Starting from pole position, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver battled early with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Christian Lundgaard before executing a strategic pit stop that gave him the lead for good.

The win marks Palou's second consecutive victory in the Sonsio Grand Prix and his 10th career IndyCar win.

It also propels the Spaniard to the top of the championship standings, 12 points ahead of Penske’s Will Power who finished second in Saturday’s event.

The race was a tactical chess match between the top contenders. A record 13 lead changes unfolded as drivers and pit crews battled for position.

During the second round of pit stops, Power attempted an undercut strategy, aiming to jump Lundgaard by pitting earlier. However, the strategically placed CGR sister car of Marcus Ericsson held Power back, allowing Lundgaard to maintain his leading position, albeit temporarily.

Palou capitalized on this by taking an overcut strategy, pitting later and emerging ahead of Lundgaard after the stops cycled through.

He then controlled the race, even after a late-race caution period caused by a spin. Palou set the fastest lap on his way to a dominant victory, never looking back.

The win sets the stage for an exciting Indianapolis 500, with Palou carrying momentum and confidence into the prestigious blue ribband event.
