New Delhi: Indian Para Taekwondo athlete Aruna Tanwar faced a tough defeat in the round of 16 in the K44-47 kg women’s category at the Paris Paralympics on Thursday. Competing against Turkey’s Nurcihan Ekinci, Aruna lost 0-19. Despite sustaining an injury during the match, she displayed remarkable determination by continuing to fight. However, her resilience was not enough to secure a place in the next round.

“Women #ParaTaekwondo K44-47 kg Round of 16 @ArunaTanwar1 suffers a shattering injury in her match but still gets up to fight back. She gives her best before losing to Turkey’s Nurcihan Ekinci with a 0-19 scoreline With this Aruna’s journey at the #ParisParalympics2024 comes to an end But what a spirit shown, champ! #Cheer4Bharat and keep supporting #TeamIndia at #Paris2024,” tweeted Sports Authority of India (SAI) Media.

The Indian mixed doubles para-badminton campaign at the Paralympics in Paris opened with an all-Indian contest as the pair of Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan edged past Suhas Yathiraj and Palak Kohli on Thursday. Nitesh and Thulasimathi won in straight games 21-14, 21-17.

On the same day, starting the para-badminton voyage of India in the Paralympic Games on a poorer note, Manasi Joshi bowed out. Both were contesting their women’s singles SL3 Group Stage first-round matches. Manasi, fighting in Group A and a 2019 World Championships gold medalist, played Indonesia’s Qonitah Ikhtiar Syakuroh. Manasi managed to win the first game but lost the following two games, taking the match 21-16, 13-21, 18-21.

While in another women’s singles SL3 Group B, Mandeep Kaur was pitched against Nigeria representative Mariam Eniola Bolaji. The Nigerian representative looked so dominant in the match as she thrashed Mandeep in straight games 8-21, 14-21 to knock her out.

Participating in the Paralympics 2024 in Paris, India will present its biggest contingent ever with 84 athletes from 12 sports, duly giving a lot of affirmation to the arising para-sports presence of this country. India is looking forward to breaking through a spectacular appearance in Tokyo 2020, where the country garnered 19 medals-five gold, eight silver, and six bronze-when it takes the mat with higher hopes for great achievements at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
