SIMMER ENDURO 5.9M TEST REVIEW 2024

The Verdict

The Simmer Enduro is pleasant, stable and extremely user-friendly as it does not often feel over powered due to its natural tuning ability. The Enduro’s drive comes from the front of the sail, which makes gybing and working onto the plane a breeze. The Enduro feels at home on a freeride board, but will just as easily open the doors for the user in typical bump and jump conditions.

The Lowdown

Immediately, the Enduro’s fluorescent yellow top and luff sleeve brighten up the beach, especially on a grey and rainy day. Rigged and at rest, there is plenty of twist as the leech falls away with the recommended downhaul settings. The battens above and below the boom overlap the mast and hold some pre-bend, guiding the power delivery and expanding as the sail fills on the water. Attention to detail is clearly demonstrated here as the two battens which overlap the mast are reinforced at the luff with an extra durable material to prolong the life of the sail as the battens rotate around the mast through transitions, just as they are designed to. The sail looks quite freeride-oriented, however, it has a similar boom length to others on test, so it should still hold manoeuvrable characteristics for bump and jump. Quality materials are used throughout the Enduro’s 5-Batten layout – two kevlar stretch tendons run from the stainless-steel O-ring at the clew to the luff, assisting the sail’s twist, wind range, and longevity. Lighter monofilm is used in the top of the sail down into the belly where a large window sits to reduce both overall weight and swing weight. In high-load areas around the clew, foot, and the luff, 5mm X-Ply is used to increase durability, while delivering stable power.

Brand Claim

“The Café Racer of windsurfing sails, the Enduro combines bump ’n’ jump wave sailing and freeride performance into one sail. We have designed the Enduro to get you up and planing as early as possible, while keeping you in control for longer when the wind picks up.”

Performance

On the water and in the hands, getting going is a gentle affair, even in well-powered conditions. With power coming from forwards and along the mast of the Enduro, its pre-loaded battens and depth expand as the sail is sheeted in. The power sitting upfront allows you to sink down, drop, push, and hold this position. The Enduro efficiently works you onto the plane with added softness to the rider, which showcases its friendly usability. It was difficult to feel overpowered while riding the Enduro, even in some pretty lit conditions. Its natural tunability keeps you fast, and the power remains stable in the gusts. Through the lulls, an adjustment in stance, standing taller and pushing the Enduro forward to increase the pull in the front of the sail, will keep you driving through the lulls with ease. The Enduro feels light in the gybes, rotating beautifully, while it is incredibly forgiving, particularly during the exits with a committed drop and push. On the exit the power is delivered softly again, which gives you ample time to set yourself and power through crisp planing gybes. The Enduro feels best when paired with a more freeride-oriented board or a larger freewave board. The Enduro still handles rougher waters with ease as it holds its shape to remain stable and manoeuvrable, even when pushing the Enduro’s limits in conditions more geared towards bump-and-jump. Its stable power and natural ability to not feel overpowered are welcomed, allowing the rider to maximise their fun in a variety of conditions, all with one sail.
