Rescue tips for nasty rips

Small waves can at times create strong rips for inexperienced swimmers.

You’re probably aware that a lot of swimmers d have drowned over the Summer, and that most of those have occurred at unpatrolled, often remote locations..

Like the kind of places that you might be going away to over Easter camping or surfing, eg at remote beaches in National Parks. Even if you’re not this time, here’s a few tips you might find useful. TG is here to help >>>

1 Assuming (?) you’ve checked out the surf at unfamiliar locations before you go in (so you don’t have an embarrassing incident), if you spot someone in trouble, call for help.

Some beaches have these…

Emergency Response Beacons

2 Don’t try to do a rescue without a floatation device yourself, or there could then be two people in trouble.

3 If you  find that you’re the only person near someone who’s in trouble in a rip, and your only rescue equipment available is the short board you’re riding, try this rescue method…

4. If you ride a mal/ longboard, you may find trying to carry two people on it  makes it too low in the water to make much progress.

Instead, tell the person to stay in the water and grab your ankle while you paddle out of the rip toward the breaking waves and they kick. (trust me.. they hang on to your ankle like their life depends on it!).

Enjoy your holidays.. incident free. You might make new friends ????
