US Open of Surfing: Hawaiians dominate big Huntington Beach event

Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau and Bettylou Sakura Johnson earned the US Open of Surfing Challenger Series title, while Hawaii's Kelis Kaleopaa and Oceanside surfer Taylor Jensen won the Duct Tape Invitational.

Hello Friends, As of 0730 skies were mostly clear along the beaches, wind was 9-13 kts from the west and swell at sea was 2.5m from 176° at 9 seconds apart. As the pictures show, this was translating into clean shoulder to head plus sets along the beach at Dee Why.

Hello Friends, A sparkling start to Sunday morning along the beaches. The carpark was full at Dee Why, there were chirping kids and parents with coffees and senior folks gliding past on eBikes and even a few hopeful surfers waxing up.

Hello Friends, As expected, the swell perked up a little overnight and this morning saw waist to chest plusses at NE exposures. Swell at sea was 1.3 metres at 8 seconds from the NE. Weather was overcast to start, but the forecast is for sunny and 22 later.

Hello Friends, Mild and overcast start to Thursday with gusty NW wind making for clean surface conditions. There were a few ankle to knee-plus peaks to be found along the open stretches. Swell at sea was around a metre from the NE but the period was just 4 seconds, so it’s really just chop.
