SF Giants unveil new City Connect jerseys aimed at San Francisco’s musical roots

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants’ groovy new City Connect jerseys, which aim to reflect San Francisco’s music history, will debut Tuesday night when they play the Cincinnati Reds.

The Giants released images of the new jerseys Tuesday morning, noting that they were inspired by the psychedelic gig posters of the 1960s and the flow of lava lamps.

“With our new City Connect uniform, we’re pushing creative boundaries and remixing how the Giants reflect the spirit of our city,” Giants chief marketing officer Rachel Heit said in a statement. “This launch goes beyond a jersey—it’s a cultural statement. We’re thrilled to collaborate with Nike and San Francisco’s vibrant music scene to create something that honors our legacy, celebrates our culture and connects with our fans in a bold new way.”

Photos of the jersey and logo leaked online in the weeks leading up to the release. Similar to the original City Connects, reactions were very much mixed among the fanbase, one of the main contentions being the inclusion of the color purple.

The Giants’ release noted that the purple was a nod to the New York Giants of 1913-1917, who wore purple as a nod to New York University.

Shortstop Willy Adames has been wearing a purple glove this season, though he has not said whether it was intended to coincide with the new City Connect jerseys.

The Giants unveiled their first City Connect jerseys in July 2021 to mixed reviews and ultimately went 30-16 in the bright orange and white uniforms, which were inspired by San Francisco’s famous fog. During San Francisco’s 107-win season, the team went 8-1 with the “creamsicles.” Arguably the best moment with the original City Connects was Blake Sabol’s walk-off, two-run homer off the St. Louis Cardinals’ Ryan Helsley. Production issues delayed the uniform’s 2024 debut, and the Giants only went 4-6 with them last season.

“Most of the City Connects I’ve found to be a little unique,” said manager Bob Melvin last year. “I think the winning percentage has been pretty good in them, so there’s always that risk, right?”

Along with the Giants, the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals have unveiled new City Connect jerseys while the Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox are slated to release new editions this season.
