One thing about GM Ryan Pace was he did everything possible to keep the cameras out of Halas Hall as much as necessary. Any footage leaking to the public was treated as if they were vital battle plans falling into enemy hands. It was never easy to understand. One thing has become clear about his replacement, Ryan Poles. While he appreciates the need for secrecy in certain situations, the man has zero fears about making the Chicago Bears more accessible to fans. That was proven again during a terrific video showcasing the team’s first-ever scout school.

The organization invited several students from the BUILD Chicago program to take them through the entire process of what it’s like to be a scout for the Bears. While the whole video is excellent, some of the juiciest details came when Assistant Director of College Scouting Breck Ackley took them through the process step by step. During a lengthy PowerPoint presentation, he revealed the specific states every regional scout covers and what details they prioritize with every offensive and defensive position.

For example, defensive tackles and defensive ends are judged first on their explosion and quickness. Cornerbacks, on the other hand, are judged on ball skills. Wide receivers are judged on their release, while offensive tackles prioritize pass protection. It was an excellent education on how the Bears will approach the upcoming 2023 draft.

Fans must appreciate what the Chicago Bears are doing.

These details should make the coming months leading up to the draft so much more fun. It will be easier to identify which players they may have their eyes on. During the eras of Pace, Phil Emery, and Jerry Angelo, there was lots of groping in the dark. Nobody could be 100% certain what the team would prioritize with players. That is why picks like Mitch Trubisky, Shea McClellin, and Chris Williams came as shocks. They weren’t what many fans expected would be the targets at the time. Now we may have an easier time pinpointing what Poles might do when the Bears are on the clock in April.

One can only hope more videos like this continue to come out. They are not only entertaining but also a rarity for this organization. There is no telling how long they’ll last. It’s important to appreciate them because the next regime, whenever it arrives, might not see the value of such things. These new Chicago Bears are easy to root for if for no other reason than they’re willing to let fans in.
