Chelsea verdict: Gutless Blues not playing for Lampard as boss edges closer to the chop in Leicester loss

0 21

GUTLESS with no desire – Chelsea players are not playing for Frank Lampard with his job hanging by a thread.

It looked like another nail in the coffin of Lampard’s Chelsea managerial career on a wet Tuesday night in Leicester.

The home side are certainly no slouches, but the midfield legend’s side quite simply lacked urgency, desire, and were totally gutless as they were left playing with fear in the 2-0 defeat

Players were happy to do the basics and that is about it.

Happy to run but not at an urgent pace, happy to play football but not win the match.

But the bottom line is, they are not happy at all.

The players simply did not look like they were playing for a manager who is under extreme pressure, all bar a few of them.

Mason Mount was the only one out there tonight looking like he actually cared whether they won or lost, the rest of them were limp and had no fight at all.

Lampard rightfully has his critics and he reiterated why tonight – refusing to make substitutions until far too late in the game, and even then, they were questionable.

But he does not have one real leader out on that pitch, just individual players with some quality who are not prepared to stand up and be counted, and not prepared to leave everything out on the pitch.

Lampard will take the blame and I cannot argue, but the players here must also take a huge chunk of this blame, especially tonight.

They were nothing short of lacklustre and disinterested, and perhaps some of the whispers of dressing room unrest would not be too far from the truth after the evidence of tonight.

I do not know whether Lampard will now be sent packing, but this is a results-based business and not only are Chelsea not getting the results right now, they are playing abysmally.

The Chelsea boss is quite literally hanging on to his job by a very thin thread, and we know how badly clubs at this level need results and instant success.

But will the Chelsea board continue to back the club legend? Will they continue to see the investment spent in big-name signings this summer as a longer project rather than instant world-beaters?

Well, I fear we will find out the answer very soon, because after that performance there will only be more and more questions being asked.
