49ers offense loses Raheem Mostert again, plus two more starters injured

Raheem Mostert is exiting the 49ers’ lineup again.

Sunday night’s high ankle sprain will keep their leading rusher from the upcoming trip to New England, and he likely will go onto a short-term injured reserve list, coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday.

This injury-stricken season has finally caught up to the offensive line, too. Center Ben Garland (calf) is ticketed for injured reserve until he recovers in perhaps a month, and left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) is being evaluated after his previously undisclosed injury in the 49ers’ 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

To again replace Mostert, the 49ers will turn to Jerick McKinnon, rookie JaMycal Hasty and possibly Jeff Wilson Jr., who did not suit up Sunday night because of a calf strain they’re hoping he will return from this week.

Tevin Coleman is a “long shot” to come off injured reserve this week, having been out with a knee sprain from the same game as Mostert’s knee injury against the Jets on Sept. 20.

“It’s definitely different,” quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said of an offense without Mostert. “Raheem is so unique with his speed and how he hits the hole and how he sees things.”

Mostert’s left ankle was twisted on a tackle after a 4-yard reception inside the final minute of the first half. He tested it on a 1-yard run after halftime, then retreated to the bench with 76 all-purpose yards on the night, including 65 on 17 rushes.

When Mostert missed 2 1/2 games with a knee sprain, the 49ers turned to Jerick McKinnon as the starter, and McKinnon gave way in Sunday’s closing action to rookie JaMycal Hasty. Jeff Wilson Jr. did not suit up because of a calf injury, and

“Our running backs, we’re pretty deep there,” Garoppolo added.

The offensive line’s depth will be tested for the first time because of injury, aside from center Weston Richburg’s extended stay on the physically-unable-to-perform list since training camp. “He had the knee from last year, then he had shoulder surgery during the offseason that really set him back,” Shanahan said. “Not sure which set him back the worse. I know we won’t get him until at least Week 12.

Hroniss Grasu is in line to replace Garland based on how the 49ers opened the season because of Garland’s high-ankle sprain. If Williams is out, look for Justin Skule to fill in at left tackle, as was the case Sunday night when Williams was evaluated (and eventually cleared) for a possible concussion.

The 49ers also are unsure on safety Jaquiski Tartt’s availability after Sunday night’s groin injury forced him out of the second half.
