Yet the legend has been told by the sport’s chiefs he would have to qualify along with  pub players if he comes out of retirement in 2020.

The Power, 59, quit two years ago after losing in the PDC Worlds  final to Rob Cross.

But, according to PDC chairman Barry Hearn, Taylor has enquired about a way back to the pro circuit.

One possibility would be to take his place in the UK Open qualifiers in Rileys Sports Bars next month ahead of the tournament in Minehead in March.

Hearn said: “I spoke with Phil a few weeks ago. He was thinking about, ‘Shall I play the UK Open by entering a Rileys qualifier?’.

“He phoned me and said, ‘What do you feel about it?’. I said, ‘Look, you aren’t subject to the player’s contract any more. You’re entitled to do what you like’.”

Another route would be Q School, which attracts hundreds of wannabe players who want a PDC Tour Card.

Hearn added: “Phil is enjoying himself.

“But part of him misses that competitive element he doesn’t get doing exhibitions.”
