WATCH: Royals manager Ned Yost will retire as the club's career wins leader

Royals manager Ned Yost will retire as the club’s career wins leader when he steps away from the dugout at the conclusion of this season next week.

The 64-year-old announced Monday that he is retiring. According to a statement released by Kansas City via its Twitter account, the retirement is effective this coming Sunday, Sept. 29. The announcement came on the team’s semifinal off-day of the season.

Yost’s time with the Royals concludes after nine seasons as skipper during which the franchise won two American League pennants and the 2015 World Series, KC’s first championship in three decades. He has been on a year-to-year contract and this season is the second consecutive with at least 100 losses for the struggling-again team.

Yost has 744 career wins with five games left, which is the most of any manager in franchise history. He’s also the only Kansas City Royals manager to ever lead the club to back-to-back World Series. Yost played five seasons with Major League Baseball (with the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, and Montreal Expos) and served as a coach with the Atlanta Braves for 11 seasons. Before managing the Royals, Yost managed the Brewers from 2003-2008.

The Royals host the Atlanta Braves Tuesday and Wednesday and host the Minnesota Twins Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
