WATCH: Joe Montana weighs in on Ben Roethlisberger's injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers (0-2) are being inexact about what specific elbow injury is sidelining veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. MRI results after the 28-26 loss to the Seahawks (2-0) showed that the 37-year-old will need to undergo surgery that will leave him out for the season.

The ambiguity of the injury isn’t stopping former San Francisco 49ers great Joe Montana from sending some advice Roethlisberger’s way. Montana was Roethlisberger’s age when an elbow injury in the 1991 pre season sidelined him for more than a season. The 49er lost his starting job to Steve Young, although he did return to San Francisco playing limited time as a backup in 1992, then finished his career in Kansas City with the Chiefs.

Roethlisberger got a new two-year extension from the Steelers in April, worth $68 million in new money, including a $37.5 million signing bonus. Here’s is Montana’s advice to the quarterback in order to be able to compete at a level post-op next season that gives Big Ben an opportunity for another.

”The technology is so advanced these days, they can probably fix it to where it’s better than before,” Montana told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday night. “I don’t know the extent of his specific injury, but as long as he rehabs it, takes a serious approach to rehab, he’ll be fine.

“He’s not a spring chicken, but if he stays with it and nothing happens that would cause a setback, he should be OK.”
