Brit Paralympic star David Weir thought he would die during horror car crash with car that jumped red light
PARALYMPIC legend David Weir thought he was a “goner” when he was involved a car crash that blighted his London Marathon preparations.
The wheelchair racer had to be rescued by fire-fighters after a mum driving her kids ploughed into the side of his car at 8.45am last December.
Weir, who had only just returned to full-time training, feared the worse in the split-seconds before the impact in his hometown Sutton.
His white Skoda Karoq was hit such force it was pushed into roadside railings with the other car under its back wheels.
The 39-year-old, nicknamed Weirwolf, told SunSport: “When she hit me, I thought I was a goner!
“Thank God for new cars and airbags. One airbag prevented my head hitting the glass.
“I was still a bit concussed and it all very scary.
“I went through the green light, but she came out of nowhere having jumped a red light.
“I thought to myself ‘I ain’t making this’ and held on to the steering wheel as hard as I could. She took me clean out, wrote my car off
“It could have been all over. I had only been back a week having had time off after the New York Marathon.
“I was then off a month with a sore back and neck.”
Weir, who withdrew from the Boston Marathon earlier this month, says he holds no grudge against the other driver.
And he is determined to win a record ninth men’s wheelchair title on Sunday.

He said: “Things happen in life and you get on with it. I can’t be angry, people make mistakes.
“She had kids in the car. She might have turned around because they were screaming in the back. The main thing was they were okay. I was more worried about her because she had kids in the car.
“Okay, I’ve lost a bit of training but will do my best in London.
“If I only did one race a year, it would always be the London Marathon. As a London lad, it stirs something in me, it’s in my blood, it’s part of me.”
