NEWS10 speaks to victim of Rensselaerville shooting
RENSSELAERVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) Two men are facing attempted murder charges after allegedly opening fire on a woman's car while she was driving. NEWS10's Amber Fisher spoke with the victim, who said she was just trying to protect her son.
Police received a call around 1 A.M. Sunday morning about a woman with a gunshot wound to her arm. The shooting occurred near the intersection of State Route 85 and County Route 6 in the town of Rensselaerville.
According to Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, the victim was a 53-year-old mom who went to check on her son, who was being verbally threatened by the two suspects. She then followed the suspects in her car in an attempt to get their license plate information. The suspects eventually got behind the victims car and began shooting. Police said that the two suspects intentionally opened fire.
The victim spoke with NEWS10's Amber Fisher, and shared harrowing details about what played out. The victim said that the only thing on her mind in that moment was keeping herself and her family safe. She added that while she was being shot at, she ducked behind her dashboard and kept driving in an attempt to get away from the suspects.
The truck she was driving is bullet-ridden. She was directly hit in the arm, but she said that she felt like she was going to die after a bullet grazed her neck and went into her headrest. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple also spoke to NEWS10 about the shooting, "One [bullet] struck her in the arm. The other...came through her head or headrest just missing her, exiting the windshield. Another bullet came through, exited the windshield. So she's very lucky. Thank God she only sustained injuries to her arm."
The victim was taken to Albany Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. The two suspects fled the scene of the shooting and were found in Lee, Massachusetts. Lane Stannard and Joel Keeny, both 24 years old, were taken into custody. Both men are facing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy, and criminal possession of a weapon. The case will be going in front of a grand jury later this week.
