Troopers identified in Malta barracks shooting, AG investigating
MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The troopers involved in the shooting at the New York State Police barracks in Malta have been identified. David Levine, 69, of Malta, was fatally shot during the April 9 incident.
NYSP said Levine went to the barracks and shot at the building with a long gun. Troopers reportedly issued multiple commands for him to drop the weapon, but Levine pointed the gun at them. That's when troopers shot at Levine, fatally wounding him.
The troopers involved have been identified as Eric Brown, Nicholas Dziamba and Joshua Mallard. NYSP said Trooper Brown has been with them for 19 years and is assigned to Troop G's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. Trooper Dziamba has been with NYSP for more than 9 years and is assigned to Troop G in Charlton. Trooper Mallard has been with NYSP since April 2024 and is assigned to the Malta barracks.
Troopers Dziamba and Mallard were in the building at the time of the shots fired and Trooper Brown responded from the immediate area. All three troopers are on voluntary leave, said NYSP.
The New York State Attorney's General's Office confirmed on Friday that they are investigating the incident, as per state law. Another shooting in Malta happened the next day at the Ellsworth Apartments. Brandon Moore, 37, was killed by police in that incident.
