Albany man sentenced to 35 years for 2024 fatal shooting
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- 43-year-old John Stanfield of Albany was sentenced on Friday in connection to the 2024 shooting death of Ozzie Gardner, the Albany County District's Attorney's Office (ACDAO) announced. The Albany man was ordered to serve a total of 35 years in state prison for first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Stanfield previously confessed to shooting Gardner several times in the chest near Judson and Second Streets in Albany around 12:40 a.m. on January 1, 2024. The incident stemmed from an argument between the two men during a New Year's Eve celebration.
Gardner later died from his injuries at Albany Medical Center. Stanfield pleaded guilty in Albany County Court back in January after initially pleading not guilty in a March 2024 indictment.
"You not only victimized his family, but you victimized your own family, and you victimized the
community," presiding Judge Roger McDonough told Stanfield. "This is just another death in the laundry list of deaths for no reason here in Albany County, which sadly happens all too often."
According to the ACDAO, Stanfield issued an apology to Gardner's family prior to his sentencing. Assistant District Attorneys Collin D'Arcy and Bryanne Perlanski prosecuted the case.
