San Jose: Final suspect arrested in fatal 2021 shooting at downtown high rise

SAN JOSE — The fourth and final person wanted in a fatal shooting last year inside a downtown high rise near San Jose State University has been arrested, police announced Tuesday.

Dante Disburke (Left) and Jvontay Davidson (Right) have been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting at a downtown San Jose high rise on April 24, 2021, authorities said. (San Jose Police Dept.)

Jvontay Davidson, 21, was arrested Friday in his home city of Stockton by San Jose police officers after nearly a year of trying to find him, the department said in a news release.

Davidson had been criminally charged, along with three other people who were arrested last year, in connection with the April 24, 2021 shooting death of 20-year-old Damion Ruffin at The Grad on East San Carlos Street.

To this day, few details have been released by authorities about what led to the shooting. A police statement of facts, an investigative summary that typically accompanies the filing of murder charges, was ordered sealed by a judge five days after the shooting to prevent sensitive information from being released while people suspected in the killing were still being sought.

San Jose police confirmed to this news organization Tuesday that there are no more suspects in the case. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said that it would move to unseal the statement of facts by the end of a Thursday court hearing for the case.

In the meantime, the sparse information in available court documents allege that Davidson and 21-year-old San Jose resident Dante Disburke Jr. were responsible for shooting Ruffin, with Disburke specifically alleged to have pulled the trigger.

Disburke, who records show also lived in the building where the shooting occurred, was arrested May 4 along with two women, one of whom lived with him. Both women were charged with being accessories to murder after the fact on allegations that they tried to help Disburke avoid arrest.

Disburke was charged with murder alongside Davidson, who police said eluded capture by constantly relocating and trying to minimize his paper trail — such as avoiding using any credit cards in favor of cash — though he ended up being arrested in Stockton, his listed city of residence.

In the wake of Davidson’s arrest, a court hearing has been called for Thursday to consolidate the separate murder and accessory cases. Both Disburke and Davidson are currently being held without bail at the county Main Jail in San Jose.
