Rotation Clarification

0 6

The most realistic depth chart for the Lakers is as follows:

PG: Caruso/Cook/Rondo
- This position will be a revolving door throughout the season. The starter will definitely have to earn it and each player has shown their ability and reason why they should/can start. Caruso, jokes aside, is a lengthy, surprising athletic guy with decent vision, great shooting (small sample size though), and good defense. Although he got most of his minutes the past couple seasons in garbage time/games, he has shown his potential in the league, especially in the game against the Clippers where he took over. Cook is a great shooter who started for the Warriors when Curry was hurt. He has shown his ability to run an offense decent enough but his defense is still lacking. But with Lebron on the team, he can play more off ball and catch and shoot which he is rather elite at. The defense is where he needs to improve; Hopefully Vogul can help with that. Rondo is a seasoned NBA vet and champion. After his stint with the Celtics, he has had a so-so career but showed flashes of his former self, especially with the Pelicans which is great since we now have his two best teammates from that team. I personally think Caruso and Cook should split the starter minutes with Rondo leading the second unit as the facilitator.

SG: Green/KCP/Daniels
- This is rather easy to determine as Green is by far superior to KCP. A two-time NBA champion who holds the record for most 3s in the finals, Green is an amazing sharp shooter and an excellent addition to the team. Although his first two years with the team has been rather subpar and frustrating, hopes are KCP finally settles into his role on the team and becomes a more consistent threat from behind the arch and as well as continues to provide his defense. Daniels is merely a depth piece at this point but his ability to shoot the 3 will get him minutes when needed.

SF: Lebron/Dudley/THT
- Another no brainer - the best player in the league clearly is not going to concede much minutes to Dudley. But Dudley is a shooter like most of the free agent signings and will provide veteran leadership and toughness that is much needed. THT is a rookie and most likeup wont get minutes on the main roster. However he will develop in the G-League and hopefully show signs of his potential.

PF: AD/Kuzma
- AD's preference in position to play is PF, contrary to everyone saying he should play Center to get Kuzma in the starting lineup. AD just waived his 4 million dollar trade clause to help with free agency, something he did not have to do (but thank you Space Jam 2) so we should not request him to do something he really does not want to do. Also, to help prevent his body from breaking down and have him ready for the playoffs, it is best to keep him at PF where he is lightyears above the rest of the league's PFs. If we want him to re-sign next summer, it would be smart to let him play what he wants and show the flexibility and support the Lakers give to their stars. Kuzma off the bench is the best option and can easily be in the 6MOY conversation. No one else on the bench will be able to create their own shot if Kuzma started so it would be absolutely necessary we have a threat coming in with the second unit. However, much like the Flippers own 6th man, Kuzma most likely will still be playing starter level minutes.

C: Mcgee/Boogie
- Center will also be a revolving door for the early parts of the season but should work out either way. Mcgee most likely will start in the beginning as we see how Boogie is following his injuries. Pairing AD with Mcgee in the starting lineup will give us two amazing rim defenders which is something absolutely necessary especially if Rondo/Cook starts and their defense is still not up there. There may not be enough spacing but who knows, the coaching staff may let Mcgee start shooting jumpers which he has been working on. But the offense will definitely be pick and roll based with Bron and the two bigs with the two guards waiting for the kick out 3. Hopefully Cousins will return to form, or at least ~80%, because if so he will easily start over Mcgee. AD and Cousins already has shown how deadly that combo can be when they were together on the Pelicans and with Lebron running the show with them, there is almost no way to stop them both. Also who in the league has two bigs good enough to guard the two All-Stars? (besides the 76ers with Embiid and Horford). Mcgee on the bench still will not be that bad as he started with Kuzma last year so that chemistry and complimentary will still be there. If Rondo is in the lineup with them, even better.

Although that is the main rotation/depth chart, here is the most likely end of game/death lineup(s):
PG: Lebron // PG: Lebron
SG: Green // SG: Green
SF: Kuz // SF: KCP
PF: AD // PF: Kuz
C: Cousins // C: AD

Both of these lineup are easily the most star-studded lineup our roster can create. When each lineup is used will be dictated by the flow of the game as well as who the other team has on the floor. Lebron will be the point in each but will only be that on offense as on defense, KCP/Green will slide to guard the opposing team's 1. The second lineup is more likely to be used due to the fact that most teams have a dominant backcourt and the Lakers will not have Kuz or Lebron running around and guarding those players faster/quicker than them. In that same lineup, Cousins and Kuz are interchangeable according to how they are playing in each game.

I have great faith that Vogul will be competent enough to establish a nice rotation with the roster and play those who should be playing. As important as it will be for the team to play up to expectations, teh coaching staff will be responsible for the team's success this upcoming season.

EDIT: As I was writing this, Bradley just signed a deal with the Lakers. Although Iguodala was definitely the choice and fit the team way better as there is still a hole in the SF part, signing him was necessary to add more wing defenders to the team. He will slide into the guard rotation and be the primary defenders with Green and KCP. He could even be a part of the end of the game lineups instead of KCP/Green depending on who is having the better game. If Iguodala eventually gets bought out and is available, I can see the Lakers easily simply cutting one of the end of the bench guys.
