Connecticut teen shot by police Saturday night dies

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (AP) — An 18-year-old Connecticut man shot by police after allegedly driving toward an officer during an attempted traffic stop last weekend has died.

State police announced Monday night that Anthony Jose Vega Cruz, of Wethersfield, "has succumbed to his injuries."

The death came just hours after protesters rallied outside Wethersfield police headquarters and demanded police dashcam video of the shooting.

Wethersfield police tried to pull Cruz over at about 6 p.m. Saturday because they say his license plates didn't match his car. Police say when Cruz drove toward an officer, the officer opened fire.

Family members say Cruz was struck in the head.

Chief James Cetran says, per protocol, the officer who fired, whose name hasn't been released, is on paid leave.

State police are investigating the shooting.
