Duke’s Deep Shots Dip

Three point shooting at Duke is not what it usually is.

Given the makeup of its roster, and coach Mike Krzyzewski’s honest appraisal of his team’s strengths and not-such strengths prior to the season, it’s no surprise Duke isn’t exactly burning up the nets with a 3-point barrage.

Krzyzewski has been one of the most prolific employers of the 3-pointer.

This year, though, through a dozen games, the portion of Duke’s shots taken from the bonusphere is 31.7 percent, matching the output in 1995, when Krzyzewski was sidelined by exhaustion and back troubles and the Blue Devils sank to the bottom of the ACC standings.

Since then, only in 1999 and 2007 did they rely less heavily on threes. The ’99 team was one of the ACC’s best ever; the ’07 team was one of Krzyzewski’s worst since he arrived at Durham in 1981-82.

The current team derives a pedestrian 24.1 percent of its points on threes, worst than any K squad since 1994. Just 21.8 percent of the Devils’ made field goals come from beyond the 3-point arc, at the bottom of the ACC along with NC State.

Duke is 11^th among ACC teams in 3-point accuracy, its .350 conversion rate, second-worst of Krzyrzewski’s tenure after the .349 of 2009.
