JaVale McGee is shooting threes now

0

This summer, JaVale McGee has been adding a new weapon to his game: a three-point shot.

Coming off a breakout season, JaVale McGee was likely searching for a decent contract this offseason. At 29 years old, he averaged 23.0 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per 36 minutes, on 64.2% True Shooting. Playing with the best talent in the world, McGee excelled as an athletic finisher, providing the Warriors with their best vertical spacer in years.

Looking for potential offers, he’s been filming his workouts. It’s easy to forget how dominant NBA players are in an open gym.

Wait, what was that at 0:23? Was that a casual three-pointer from the corner? Is that something he’s trying to seriously add to his game?

JaVale wasn’t able to find any offers that suited him this offseason, and re-signed with the Warriors. A couple of days later, he tweeted out an entire video showcasing his three-point shooting.

His shot admittedly looks pretty pure. And it’s not during just practice: it’s during Drew League games. On Sunday, NBA insider Nate Jones said that, in fact, McGee has been shooting and hitting threes all weekend.

JaVale’s biggest weaknesses were on the defensive end last year, where he sometimes struggled in pick-and-roll coverage and going for blocks when simple shot-contests are safer. But he improved throughout the season, and looks to build on his success next season.

As a career 57.5% free throw shooter, maybe it’s a little much to expect he’ll be able to hit threes consistently during the season. After all, he’s only hit one in his NBA career. But if he could occasionally hit midrange jumpers, it would only increase his offensive versatility.

Then again, a JaVale McGee three-pointer would be one of the greatest Warriors moments of all time.
