Names and faces: Ty Akabane, Phil Scott
Akabane, 16, will be participating in the U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship next week at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J. She qualified at Lake Merced last month, shooting rounds of 74 to beat out 78 of 79 other golfers.
Akabane, one of the youngest qualifiers for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship the past two years, will be one of 20 amateurs in the Open.
The Republican state leader won the 50-lap feature Thursday at Thunder Road in Barre, taking home $1,200.
Scott easily won two preliminary heats Thursday before starting the feature in the pole position and leading from start to finish.
