Dinghy Update – January
Following on from a cold and unsettled start to the new year, the Royal Cork Dinghy sailors are already back on the water in various different dinghy classes which are sailed at the club.
Some were enjoying slightly warmer climates with Chris Bateman and Lucy Loughton sailing their B14 in Australia at the B14 World Championships where they won convincingly against some extremely talented sailors.
Back in snow covered Ireland, the ILCA’s started the year off with a 3 day camp starting on New Year’s Day enjoying the fine weather which was on offer. 12 sailors ventured out for coaching in Cork Harbour and past Roche’s Point to enjoy the variety of conditions which were on offer.
Next out were the 420’s who started the year off with a blast, enjoying a mix of conditions and making the most of the warm weather.
The Topper class started early in the year as well with a number of sailors taking advantage of the smaller group to refine techniques. The past weekend saw 5 Topper sailors head out to make the most of the conditions out by Roche’s Point where the wind was more settled. The club also hosted the Irish Sailing Topper Squad which consists of 6 talented Topper sailors including 1 RCYC sailor.
The 9er class also made the most of holidays and time at home with the 49erFX heading out to refine their skills. The 29er class coaching starts again on the 2nd February for our new sailors to the class.
The Optimist class start their 2025 season this coming weekend as the sailors prepare for the upcoming season and importantly for some, the IODAI trials which will select the Optimist Teams and Squads for the season.
