Pontypridd v Brecon – Matchday Preview
Next up for Pontypridd RFC is the last Admiral Premiership match of the current season against Brecon RFC. It takes place this Saturday 9th May at Sardis Road and kicks off at 2:30pm.
This fixture was due to take place on Saturday 3rd January 2026, but the freezing New Year temperatures left an area of the pitch in front of the Grandstand frozen and the game was called off.
Ponty’s last match against Brecon was on the opening day of the season, all the way back on Saturday 6th September 2025 at Parc de Pugh. After an attritional first half the scores were locked at ten points apiece, but a strong second forty from the Valley Commandos saw the team bring five league points back to Sardis following a bonus-point 34-17 win. The game was a memorable one for Connah Hughes who bagged four tries on his debut for the club. Jude Williams and Oli Shepherd scored our other tries, whilst Jorge Lucey added two conversions.
Brecon’s last visit to Sardis was last season on Saturday 16th November 2024, and Ponty secured a big win by 43 points to 11 that afternoon. Much has changed since that match – on the day the team’s Head Coaches were Chris Dicomidis and Dale McIntosh. It was Dico’s last game in charge of Pontypridd before leaving the Club for a new opportunity, whilst The Chief has since left Brecon and has been replaced by former Ponty player and Wales international Kristian Dacey, brother of Gavin – the battle of the Dacey brothers is another interesting subplot this Saturday.
Pontypridd head into this week’s match off the back of an enthralling 41-26 Valleys Derby win against Merthyr on Saturday. The five match points that were earned keep the Valley Commandos’ slim title hopes alive, but as well as needing to beat Brecon this week they still require Merthyr to lose their two remaining matches away against Bargoed and Cross Keys, and for Beddau to lose their remaining match at home against Llangennech.
Also, if Ponty win this Saturday it will see the team go the entire league campaign unbeaten at home, and if that were to be the case they would be the only team in the Premiership to achieve that feat this season.
Another very interesting subplot to the Premiership standings is the Mid District Premiership standings. Pontypridd’s win against Merthyr on Saturday has seen the team draw level on points with Beddau in second, Ponty remain in third as their ‘points difference’ is inferior. However, Beddau have played all their matches against Mid District opposition which means a win or a draw against Brecon this weekend will see Pontypridd leapfrog Beddau and finish in the all-important top two and qualify for the Grand Final. The Grand Final will take place at Sardis Road on Wednesday 20th May regardless of which teams end up partaking – all the finer details for this match will be published in the very near future.
So there you have it, the season may be drawing to a close but there’s still a lot to play for and with the match being at home it gives the players, coaches and supporters one last chance to show their appreciation for each other after a long league campaign. There’s also an exciting auction taking place in the Clubhouse – all the details for this are below.
