TIME RAN OUT FOR LUCS TO PINCH A RESULT

Mortimer Park was graced with good weather for this clash of regular Nat West 2 rivals Luctonians and Hinckley, with an enthusiastic home crowd expecting the home side to keep their magnificent run of results going.

However, it was not to be, and a resolute Hinckley side, led superbly by Callum Dacey, who was their inspiration throughout, secured a memorable victory.

Hinckley were sharper in the first half and stole away to lead 0-19 with the first half whistle due, before Lucs reduced the deficit before half time.

An early score by Hinckley No8 Nick Tarr, who stole through to dot down, conversion missed (0-5), was followed on the half hour by Dacey who weaved his way over for Rory Vowles to add the extras (0-12). Hinckley further extended their advantage when Mitchell Lamb strolled over a few minutes later to increase the visitors lead, Vowles again converting.

At this stage it appeared Lucs were going to be onto a hiding, however, Jack Goodwin for the home side showed his mettle to force his way over right on half time; conversion missed to reduce arrears to 5-19 at oranges.

Lucs were now playing with the wind behind them and the sun dipping into the eyes of the away side, which would hopefully be of an advantage. However, Hinckley defended superbly well and, despite Brad Smith’s try response early in the second half, Tom Jones converting (12-19), the home side were huffing and puffing.

Samuel Read dotted down for Hinckley after breaking through poor defensive tackles by the home side; Vowles converting to stretch their lead to 12-26, before the home side came alive in the last 10 minutes following the introduction of Bryn Goodall.

Replacement Joel Middleton came up at the bottom of a driving maul to bring the score back to 17-26, this after Mitchell Lamb was yellow carded for foul play for the visitors, and Goodall’s delightful chip and run kick was picked by Charlie Grimes, with 10 minutes to go, to reduce the score to 22-26, conversion missed, to give the home side the losing bonus point, but they could not gain the territory required to pinch a result at the death.
