LUCS 13 – 24 LYMM

0 65

A DESERVED WIN FOR THE VISITORS

A well organised and defensively superb performance from Lymm saw them take the early season honours at Mortimer Park. In front of what was a sparce crowd for the usually bouncing home side, Lymm were never behind. On the balance of performance the visitors deservedly took the honours although a much-improved home side ran them close in the second half, with their scrum dominant.

Lymm opened the scoring early doors, when Pilkington ran in to dot down following a line-out close in. Simpson converting for a 0-7 advantage.

The home side however, were generous with their handling errors, allowing Lymm plenty of opportunities to defend without too many difficulties, but also gifting their second score, when a kick-through chase resulted in Charlie Grimes, for the home side, missing the bobbling ball deep in his own 22. This was collected by Stride, for the visitor, to ease over, Simpson again converting for a 0-14 score.

Lucs were back in the game on the half hour, when an excellent Bryn Goodall offload put James Wheeler through to dot down, but Goodall missed the conversion to leave the score at 5-14.

Lymm stretched their lead before half time, when Simpson converted a penalty in front of the posts to leave the half time score at 5-17.

Wheeler added his second try, almost immediately after oranges, to reduce arrears for the home side, but another missed conversion left the score at 10-17.

Goodall brought the home side back to within 4 points, when he kicked a penalty on 55 minutes (13-17) but, despite numerous forays into the Lymm red zone, the home side could not get over the line this, in the main, as Lymm defended superbly while under the pump.

They further extended their lead when Wadsworth ran in under the posts, following a driving maul just after the hour mark; Simpson again converting and, despite losing Higginson to a yellow for foul play at the death, the visitors held out to gain a 13-24 result first game of the season.

Lucs go on the road to Syston next week, whilst Lymm will be enjoying their first home game in National 2 West.
