Celebrating 150 Years of the IRFU: A Proud Moment for Old Wesley RFC
As we approach the 150th anniversary of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), we at Old Wesley Rugby Football Club are filled with immense pride and excitement. This milestone is not just a celebration of Irish rugby’s rich history, but also a testament to the enduring spirit and passion that has driven our sport forward for a century and a half. As we celebrate this significant milestone two of our esteemed members (Wayne & Ian Sheridan) have created this short video.
The IRFU was formed in 1879 as an amalgamation of the Irish Football Union, founded in December 1874, and the Northern Football Union of Ireland, founded in January 1875. This union marked the beginning of a unified and strong rugby presence in Ireland, paving the way for the growth and development of the sport we love. Founded in 1891, just a few years after the formation of the IRFU, Old Wesley RFC has been an integral part of this incredible journey. Our club’s history is intertwined with the growth and development of rugby in Ireland, and we are honoured to have contributed to the legacy of the IRFU.
Over the years, Old Wesley has seen countless memorable moments, from our victories, to our players, coaches, and supporters have all played a vital role in shaping our club’s identity and success. As we celebrate the IRFU’s 150th anniversary, we also reflect on our own achievements and the strong community that has supported us through the years.
The IRFU’s 150th anniversary celebrations are a time for all rugby clubs in Ireland to come together and honor the sport we love. We are thrilled to be part of this historic occasion and look forward to participating in the various events and activities planned by the IRFU and the club. This is a unique opportunity to showcase the unity and camaraderie that define Irish rugby, and we are excited to share this moment with our fellow clubs and supporters.
Here’s to 150 years of the IRFU and to the future of Old Wesley RFC. Together, we stand tall and proud, ready to embrace the next chapter in our club’s storied history.
