The only thing McManus did wrong was the timing of the comments. He should have kept quiet and let Warrington take the plaudits for their win and raised it behind closed doors with the RFL and publicly at the end of the season if it was required. What he said is fine though, without question, if you remove the club bias everyone has. There were significant issues with the appointment of Hicks for the final, he really was put into a horrible position by his employers. Had Warrington lost, there would have been allegations he was biased against them for the death threat, had Saints lost he'd get the opposite. The fact that he came up with such a clear and obvious error that had a huge say in the makeup of the match just added to the story.
The all loops back to the recurring issue we have with the quality of the administrators in both the RFL and Super League. The PR piece Hicks did with Warrington was fine, but it should not have aired the week before the final. Knowing it had, the RFL should have changed the appointment, it put undue pressure on Hicks. If he chose to bring a legal case against the RFL now, he'd wipe the floor with them. Anyone with common sense would have protected Hicks from the Challenge Cup pressure and considered him for the Grand Final had his performances been at a suitable level.
If the RFL are serious about believing this was a significant breach of their regulations, they should have hit McManus with a £250,000 fine. Back themselves and be professional about it. These pathetic fines they are using to close off difficult issues are pathetic. Leeds' cap breach? Pathetic. Catalans and Warrington fines for the crowd violence? Pathetic. This fine? Pathetic.
