VAR confusion as Liverpool ace Alexander-Arnold escapes handball penalty shout from Porto

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD was a relieved man after VAR decided NOT to penalise his handball in the box against Porto.

The Liverpool star appeared to handle the ball after it was palmed straight at him by goalkeeper Alisson.

Liverpool managed to avoid giving away a penalty after a handball by Trent Alexander-Arnold

The referee went to review the incident on VAR.

And clear guidelines claim any movement which gives the ball a bigger target to hit must be punished.

But the matchday official decided not to award a penalty to Porto, much to the bemusement of those watching the game.

PSG fans are sure to be fuming after they conceded a last-gasp penalty to Manchester United in similar circumstances.

While Spurs were punished when Danny Rose blocked the ball against Manchester City, although Sergio Aguero’s spot-kick was saved by Hugo Lloris.

Viewers watching the game flocked to Twitter to provide their opinion.

One said: “100% handball by Trent imo.”

Another wrote: “That’s a handball from Trent. Should be a penalty.”

One fan added: “If Danny Rose’s ‘clear and obvious’ handball was a penalty, how come Alexander-Arnold’s wasn’t? The man used his arm to get it out of play?”
