Nigeria are reportedly planning to play Atletico Madrid in a friendly game at the Godswill Akpabio International stadium next month as part of their preparation towards the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Super Eagles technical adviser Gernot Rohr revealed this on Supersport on Monday, April 23, in a bid to further assess his team.

Rohr further explained that selected Nigeria Professional Football League players will be the set to prosecute the game on May 21 in Uyo, saying he will not be using foreign Eagles stars for the game.

He also added that the game will be used to thank Governor Udom Emmanuel, as well as the good people of Uyo, for their support to the Super Eagles during their World Cup campaign.

“The date for the match is May 21. If they (Atletico Madrid) are coming to Nigeria for the match, it will be a good one for us. But I don’t know yet which team would play against Atletico Madrid.

“It may be CHAN Eagles or selected local-based players but the main Eagles players will not be part of it.

"I love the game to be played so that we will use the opportunity to say thank you to the government, governor and people of Uyo for their support to the Super Eagles during our stay there.” Rohr said.

Nigeria lost 2-0 to Serbia in their last friendly game at the Hive Stadium in March, four days after beating Poland 1-0 during the March international window.

They will also face DR Congo, England and Czech Republic before the World Cup kicks off on June 14, this year.

The Super Eagles are in the same group with Argentina, Iceland, and Croatia for this year’s edition of the championship as they aim to surpass their past record in the previous editions.
