Good Morning. It's Wednesday 6th May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...
Leeds strike early deal with Japanese star
Leeds United are closing in on their first summer signing after agreeing terms in principle with Sporting Lisbon midfielder Hidemasa Morita, according to Portuguese sports outlet A Bola. The Japanese international, who will celebrate his 31st birthday on Sunday, is set to depart the Portuguese club on a free transfer when his current contract expires at the end of the season. Morita's versatility makes him an attractive addition to Daniel Farke, as he is capable of operating effectively in multiple midfield roles, specifically the number 4/6 deep-lying position and the number 8 box-to-box role.
His experience in top-tier European football, combined with his adaptability across different tactical systems, aligns with Leeds United's apparent strategy of recruiting seasoned professionals who can provide immediate impact and leadership within the squad. While the agreement remains in principle at this stage, the anticipated move represents a promising piece of business for the English club as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new campaign.
Midfield cull expected this summer
The suggested arrival of reinforcements at Elland Road signals a strategic reshuffling of Leeds United’s midfield, casting significant doubt over the futures of Sean Longstaff, Ilia Gruev, and Ao Tanaka. While Longstaff shown glimpses of his quality since his £15m arrival from Newcastle, his campaign has been fractured by a mid-season calf injury and subsequent struggle to reclaim a starting berth. With a respectable, if modest, statistical output and a WhoScored rating currently trending above both Gruev and Tanaka, Leeds may look to offload the Englishman to recoup much of his initial transfer fee rather than risk his value depreciating further on the bench.
Gruev remains a model of technical efficiency; his elite ball retention (best in squad) and press-resistant passing have made him a reliable servant, yet his lack of physical dynamism may render him surplus to requirements Farke demands a more aggressive engine room. Bought to the club three years ago for just £5m, the Bulgarian International has proved to be reliable, yet not instrumental, but seems content to play a bit role for the Whites in the bench allows it.
Hampered by an MCL injury last August, Ao Tanaka has struggled both physically and tactically to conform to the top flight. Strangely enough, he sits below both Longstaff and Gruev in the Whoscored metrics, something we did not expect from our player of the season last time out. Tanaka has been one of the standout performers in recent weeks, particularly in the dominant victory over Wolves, but he often needs a little too long on the ball at this level, a trait which sees Daniel Farke limit his chances. With his market value sitting at an around £12m and a desire for more regular first team football, would the Japanese International be looking to move on this summer?
