Arsenal attacker could be sacrificed in the summer to fund major summer overhaul
According to Football Insider, Arsenal could consider the surprise sale of attacker Gabriel Martinelli as they look to balance the books.
The Brazilian attacker has been used mostly as a substitute this season with manager Mikel Arteta favouring Leandro Trossard on the left-wing.
Martinelli’s output this season has been limited, unsurprisingly, considering the amount of football he has played this season.
His form has struggled massively in the Premier League but in the Champions League he has been quite impressive.
Even last night against Sporting in the Champion, it was Martinelli who provided the impact from the bench by making an assist for Kai Havertz’s late winner.
However, the Gunners could be forced to sell the Brazilian attacker not only because they want to balance their books and invest more money in the squad but also because of his contract situation.
What does the future hold for Martinelli at Arsenal?
The 24-year-old is set to enter the final year of his contract at the club and naturally he would attract a lot of attention from the outside.
Martinelli still has the potential to get even better. Considering his age and versatility, he is far from a finished product and he would be attracting a lot of attention.
It remains to be seen if the Gunners tie him up to a new contract to protect his value or let him leave the club in the summer transfer window without offering a new deal.
In case Martinelli is allowed to leave the club, the Gunners are expected to sign a new left sided attacker.
Currently, they have Trossard and Noni Madueke as the options to play in that position, although it must not be forgotten that the latter is naturally a right-winger.
Where could Martinelli be heading if he leaves the Gunners?
A recent report from TEAMtalk has claimed that the Premier League leaders are looking to get £50 million for Martinelli.
Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Marseille are all reportedly interested in signing the Premier League star.
It remains to be seen if the Gunners will be able to get the price they want for Martinelli since he has not played enough football and his contract situation could complicate the matters for Arteta and his team.
Still only 24, he has the time to develop into a world class player and play in a number of different positions.
