Tottenham battle Chelsea and Man United to land Sporting star at £35m discount
Tottenham Hotspur have just discovered that Chelsea have entered the race to sign a full-back who is on their summer wishlist.
If the Lilywhites do manage to stay up, the expectation is that Tottenham will significantly rebuild the squad this summer after what has been a disastrous campaign.
They could enter the market for a left-back this summer despite landing Souza in January, as reports indicate that Destiny Udogie faces an uncertain future at Spurs.
The Lilywhites have been linked to make a move for another South American left-back, but they will have to see off plenty of competition for the player.
Man United ready to challenge Tottenham for Maxi Araujo
Last week, it emerged that Spurs and Chelsea had both expressed an interest in Sporting Lisbon’s Maxi Araujo, who has been one of the most consistent left-backs in the Portuguese top-flight over the last two years.
A new report in A Bola has now confirmed interest from Tottenham Hotspur and their London rivals, but they say that another Premier League giant has now entered the race for the left-back.
Man United are the latest club to express an interest in the 26-year-old, with a three-horse race emerging for the defender’s services.
The outlet adds that the Red Devils’ entry into ‘could shift the dynamics’ of the race for the Uruguayan, particularly if Michael Carrick’s men decide to move quickly.
What is Sporting Lisbon’s stance on Araujo?
A Bola make it clear that despite the growing interest in Araujo’s services, Sporting are not looking to sell the player.
The plan at the club is to keep hold of the left-back for one more season, and they are in a strong position to do so since he is contracted until 2029.
The outlet adds that Araujo has an €80m (£69m) release clause in his contract, but the belief is that Sporting would consider offers starting around €40m (£34.5m).
