‘Why not me?’ – Former Tottenham assistant manager is ready to replace Igor Tudor and hold meeting with Cristian Romero
Another former Tottenham man, who was recently managing a club in Asia, has said that he is ready and capable of guiding the Lilywhites to safety should he replace Igor Tudor.
As the pressure grows on Tudor, a number of former Spurs men have come out and expressed their willingness to replace the Croat.
Harry Redknapp has admitted that he would love to return to Tottenham, but confessed that he does not expect an approach from the club.
The same sentiment has also been echoed by Tim Sherwood, who has said that it would be impossible for him to turn down another interim opportunity at Spurs.
Gus Poyet claims he is uniquely qualified for the Tottenham challenge
Former Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet, who also served as the assistant to Juande Ramos at White Hart Lane, has now claimed that he is ready to tackle the challenge.
He insisted that his knowledge of the North London club and his experience of relegation battles make him the right man to guide the Lilywhites to safety.
Poyet, who was recently in charge of the South Korean side, Jeonbuk Motors, told The Sun about the Tottenham job: “I mean, I know everything. Sometimes they don’t put me in that position. But you know, I remember before Igor Tudor got the job, people were talking about Robbie Keane – rightly so. They were talking about Tim Sherwood – rightly so. Even Harry Redknapp, they were asking him.
“And I was sitting at home and I’m thinking, ‘Why not me?’ I’ve been there. I know the place, I know the relegation battle. I know what needs to be done. Well, at least I have the experience. I know the Premier League. It’s sometimes funny that your name is not related there, but that’s the way it is now.
“You need to put yourself in the press. If they think it’s me [for the job] I would be more than happy but it wasn’t me. And now the only thing that I want as a coach is for Igor Tudor to sort it out for him, as a coach. To have that feeling that he sorted it out and Tottenham stay up. Nothing else.”
Poyet reveals first thing he would do at Spurs if hired
The Uruguayan is clear on what his first order of business would be at Tottenham if the club do turn to him as a temporary option.
Poyet revealed that he would start by having a one-on-one with Cristian Romero, suggesting that Spurs need their captain to be at their best for them to stay up.
He added: “The first meeting that I have is with Romero. I can tell you only that [I would] sit down with him [and talk in] Spanish. Make sure that we understand each other clearly because it’s a player that you need in the best form for Tottenham to be safe.”
