Souza must start for Tottenham: Stats from 10 minute cameo were a Spurs highlight
The underlying numbers have highlighted the impact of Souza during his brief cameo in Tottenham’s clash against Fulham.
Igor Tudor’s misery at Tottenham Hotspur was compounded as his Spurs side once again fell short in their latest Premier League outing.
It was a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Fulham, the Cottagers inflicting Tottenham’s 13th league loss of the campaign, leaving them 16th and four points clear of 18th place.
Tudor knows he has his work cut out, but even in the disappointment of the defeat, there were still a few positives.
Tottenham cameo stats highlight Souza impact vs Fulham
Ultimately, the clash was split into two halves. Tottenham struggled to gain a foothold in the first 45 minutes but grew into the contest after the break, particularly once Tudor rang the changes.
Mathys Tel, Richarlison and new signing Souza injected much-needed freshness into Spurs’ attacking play. Tel earned praise from supporters and Richarlison’s goal leaves Tudor with a Kolo Muani decision to make.
However, Souza produced a display that could easily go under the radar yet was quietly impressive, making an impact in just 10 minutes and backing it up with encouraging underlying numbers from FotMob.
During the encounter against Fulham, Souza recorded:
- Touches – 5
- Accurate passes – 4/5 (80%)
- Chances created – 1
- Touches in opposition box – 2
To put that into perspective, Xavi Simons managed 0 touches in the opposition box in 58 minutes on the pitch, and also created one chance from 29 touches.
Spurs youngsters pushing for greater role under Igor Tudor
This is the type of contribution Tudor will want to consider as he searches for the right balance within his squad.
Deploying Souza on the left, with Archie Gray moved into his more natural role in midfield later in the half, lifted Tottenham’s attacking threat.
These Spurs youngsters have a part to play in the club’s fight for survival, and they deserve the opportunity to prove themselves.
Souza has made a handful of substitute appearances this season and, with Djed Spence managing a minor calf issue, it remains to be seen if the full-back may now be handed a run in the side.
