Liverpool Songs: Poetry in Motion – Took Off When We Nearly Won The League Under Rodgers

Can you remember the origin of certain songs? They tend to be tied to a time and an era, such as the fact that Allez, Allez, Allez came about during our run to the Champions League final in the 2017-2018 season, which you can read about in more detail elsewhere on the site.

When it comes to Poetry in Motion, the song really took off during the 2013-2014 campaign, when it looked as though Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side was going to surprise everyone and win an unexpected title. The question is, what is it all about?

A Song That Summed Up a Feeling

It isn’t exactly outrageous to suggest that Liverpool’s defence was far from the ‘best in the land’ during the title charge that came in 2013-2014, conceding 50 goals, the most of all but three of those finishing in the top ten in the Premier League. Even so, the attacking football from the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suárez and Raheem Sterling was sensational and thrilling to watch.

The result was a song being sung that seemed to sum up how everyone was feeling during that campaign, the lyrics for which are as follows:

We are Liverpool, lalalalala
We are Liverpool, lalalalalala
We are Liverpool, lalalalala
We’re the best football team in the land
YES WE ARE!
Poetry in motion, lalalalala
Poetry in motion, lalalalalala
Poetry in motion, lalalalala
We’re the best football team in the land
YES WE ARE!
