No room for error: Fresh update emerges on new Man Utd contract for Kobbie Mainoo
Manchester United have a big decision to make ahead of next season.
According to The Sun, Man United are yet to formally reopen contract talks with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo is under contract at United until June 2027, but the club have an option to extend his deal by 12 months.
The Red Devils offered him a new deal last year but the academy graduate turned it down.
The 20-year-old submitted a transfer request for a loan move last summer after then-manager Ruben Amorim blocked his pathway to the starting XI.
Current head coach Michael Carrick has shown full faith in Mainoo, starting him in all six of his Premier League games.
Mainoo has repaid that trust by delivering sublime performances.
During this run, he has registered two assists, covered immense ground with relentless energy and showcased the technical finesse to glide past pressing opponents with sharp turns and velvet close control.
There is little doubt that his resurgence now casts Amorim’s earlier stance in an increasingly unflattering light.
United must now act decisively and accelerate talks over a renewed long-term deal.
Despite his growing importance, Mainoo remains among the lowest earners in the senior squad.
A generational midfield talent with deep emotional ties to the club, he represents the very identity United seek to rebuild around. Allowing him to slip away would rank among INEOS’ gravest mistakes.
Mainoo could also get a golden chance to represent England again at the upcoming World Cup. United would want him to sign a new deal before he switches his focus to the biggest tournament.
