Unstoppable: JJ Gabriel beats Liverpool youngster to U18 PL feat after brace vs Derby
Manchester United U18s thrashed Derby County 6-1 in the U18 Premier League at Carrington on Wednesday afternoon, extending their winning streak in the competition to five matches.
Fresh from his heroics against Wolves, JJ Gabriel scored a brace, as did Louie Bradbury and Noah Ajayi.
Gabriel has now scored 16 goals, overtaking Liverpool’s Joshua Sonni-Lambie to become the competition’s top scorer.
United opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Bradbury was on hand to tap in from close range, following Jay McEvoy’s corner.
Derby drew level in the 27th minute, with Sean Corry scoring a rebound from Albert Mills’ clearance.
United were presented with an opportunity to regain their lead from the penalty spot after Ajayi was brought down. Gabriel stepped up to convert, netting his first of the game.
Ajayi then made it 3-1 before halftime, unleashing an unstoppable shot past Derby keeper Cristiano Dzialuk, giving United a two-goal cushion.
Bradbury got in on the act in the 66th minute, pouncing on a loose ball to fire into the net, compounding the visitors’ woes.
Two minutes later, the Rams were awarded a penalty, but Cameron Byrne-Hughes saved the spot-kick.
Gabriel made it 5-1 in the 73rd minute, rifling past the outstretched Dzialuk to register his third league brace this season.
Ajayi completed the scoring, racing into the area from United’s half, slaloming past his markers before beating the Rams goalkeeper at the near post.
United now trail leaders Manchester City by one point, although City have three games in hand.
Darren Fletcher’s side are not in league action until March 7 when they host Nottingham Forest.
