Pat Nevin says Chelsea would sell £40m star to Man Utd for "massive profit"

Chelsea legend Pat Nevin believes the Blues would entertain the prospect of selling midfielder Cole Palmer to Manchester United for a massive profit during the summer transfer window.

The England international has endured an injury-plagued season with Chelsea, but he has still managed nine goals and three assists from 19 appearances across all competitions.

Palmer has primarily scored for the Blues from the penalty spot, but he has also impressed with his chance creation and remains the most productive playmaker in their squad.

Despite this, there has been plenty of speculation regarding his future. It was recently reported that Palmer is open to joining the Red Devils as he is ‘unsettled’ in west London.

Blues manager Liam Rosenior dismissed the speculation soon after, but Nevin has now reignited the possibility by acknowledging that Chelsea are a ‘trading club’ at the moment.

The 62-year-old feels Chelsea would sanction Palmer’s sale to United for a ‘massive profit’ and he would not be shocked if the midfielder returns to Manchester at the end of the season.

In an interview with BestBettingSites, he said: “That’s a tricky one. It’s a good question, because I don’t think it comes down to whether Chelsea would sell.

“They would. Would Manchester United want him? They probably would. Would the money be difficult? No, they would probably sort that out. Chelsea are a trading club.

“They bought Cole Palmer and they could sell him at a massive profit, and that’s what they do. The Chelsea fans would be absolutely gutted because they adore him, rightly so. There have been concerns about his consistency and his injuries.

“It actually just comes down to one thing. It doesn’t come down to the clubs, it comes down to him. Does Cole Palmer fancy playing for Manchester United? That’s it. Nobody knows except Cole Palmer. If he says Manchester United, I’ve heard hints that he was a United fan as a kid.

“I don’t know if that’s true, but I’ve heard that was his team as a kid. That’s a draw. When you look at what United are doing just now and how they’re playing, and the possibility that you might actually have stability at Manchester United, that becomes a temptation.

“With Michael Carrick, it just feels like a different place. It feels totally different. The Premier League needs a big Manchester United. I hope Michael Carrick gets the job long term. I think the group that’s in just now has already shown enough that they can lift the club.

“I hope they get the job for at least the next year after this season, whatever happens between now and the end of the season. I’d give them that. Would that be enough to tempt Cole? I wouldn’t be shocked.”

Palmer would be a huge signing for Man Utd

The Red Devils have conducted good transfer business since last summer. Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha have proved sublime acquisitions to bolster the attack.

The trio combined for the winning goal against Everton in the Premier League on Monday night. Senne Lammens has equally been superb between the sticks for the club.

The Belgian made four saves, managed four punches and two high claims yesterday. He looked assured despite the constant pressure from Everton during multiple corners.

The primary focus will be on the defensive midfield department this summer, but the club could also seek to add more strength to the attack with the extra workload anticipated.

United are on course to qualify for European football next season. This would obviously mean more rotation, and Palmer would be a terrific signing for whoever manages the club.

Bruno Fernandes is an undisputed starter in the number 10 role, but there has been barely any competition, particularly with Mason Mount struggling with countless injuries.

Despite an injury-plagued season, Palmer has maintained a good fitness record throughout his career and would provide the Red Devils with more quality and depth in the final third.

Aside from an attacking midfield role, he can also operate from the right wing.

The Blues signed Palmer for around £40 million from Manchester City. The west London giants could demand double the price if they contemplate his departure.

That would not be beyond the reach of the Red Devils, who made a huge outlay of almost £200m on Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko despite the lack of European football.
