Queen’s Park 3 Morton 2 – Character in Comeback
QUEEN’S PARK recorded back to back league wins for the first time this season in a goal fest at The city Stadium.
Morton took an early lead but Nikolay Todorov’s first goal for the Spiders – deflecting in a Roddy MacGregor drive brought the home side back level and from then on Sean Crighton’s side drove on to take the points and close the gap on teams above in the William Hill Championship.
Henry Fieldson sent The city Stadium wild with a backpost header and, though it was levelled by Iain Wilson , the home side showed character to regain the advantage and see it out through Aidan Connolly with another backpost finish.
Although, Calum Ferrie was to the rescue late on with a spectacular injury-time save and chipped in with some vital stops throughout.
It took three minutes for the deadlock to be broken, a brilliant save at first from the Spiders No.1, but as Matty Shiels leapt for the aerial ball it ended up in the net.
The Spiders didn’t let this ruin their momentum though and they began instantly pushing for an equaliser at the other end.
Only six minutes after the opener, Todorov responded and scored his first goal for Queen’s in unorthodox fashion – a brilliant response from The Spiders and they continued to pile up the chances.
Queen’s fully deserved their goal and deserved more from their first half efforts. They took control after equalising, Drozd did brilliantly to work it into the box and take it past the Morton defender. He sent the ball into the air which was met with an ambitious scissor kick from Todorov beneath the new Scott McTominay mural.
As half-time approached, there was a clean cut chance either end. First, a Queen’s free kick from Longridge which once again Todorov was on the end of. He sent another header just wide and then right after up the other end, Ferrie tipped an effort from Gillepsie over the bar.
The heavens opened as the second half kicked off, but Queen’s were immediately on the front foot.
Queen’s took the lead through Henry Fieldson racing in at the backpost to head Carlo Pignatiello’s left-footed in-swinging cross on the bounce.
The Spiders looked worth their lead with just under 25 minutes to go.
Eight minutes later, Morton had their first real chance of the half and they took full advantage.
Wilson had leapt to challenge Shiels at the opener and he himself equalised, tapping in at close. However, Queen’s had a rapid response when they hit on the counter and Smith found Connolly at the back post with a slick pass. Connolly has been in the right place at the right time already this season, and he was once again to restore the lead.
The city Stadium was celebrating but Morton refused to give in and filled the Queen’s box at the end.
A shot that looked set for goal was prevented heroically by Ferrie, who managed to also push it off the line after the original save. Matty Shiels put in a brave block to ensure any follow-up stayed out and as the full time whistle was blown, cheers greeted back to back wins for Sean Crighton’s men.
Queens Park: Ferrie, Fieldson, Murray, Longridge, MacGregor (Martin 63′), Connolly, Pignatiello, Shiels, Smith (Mackenzie 87′), Drozd (Ruth 63′), Todorov (McLeish 71′)
