Michael Carrick backs Man Utd academy and sends powerful message to wonderkids
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has once again spoken glowingly about the club’s famed academy.
United started 2026 with a bang by removing Ruben Amorim from the managerial position.
Darren Fletcher was given charge for two games before Carrick took over the reins until the end of the campaign.
Amorim repeatedly criticised the United academy and publicly questioned youngsters such as Chido Obi, Toby Collyer and Harry Amass, while also limiting opportunities for Kobbie Mainoo.
Carrick has adopted a markedly different tone regarding the emerging talents at Carrington.
In a recent interview with Mark Chapman, the former midfielder admitted that he is ready to give opportunities to the starlets.
He said (via BBC Sport): “Listen, I’ve always kept that feeling of what it was like as a young player. It’s something I’ve always had an eye on and been passionate about.
“With the tradition of this football club, it’s natural to take that on. It’s just as proud a moment as any to give a young player their debut and there’s certainly a want – from not just me but all the staff and everyone at the club – to try and produce the young players and give them opportunities as much as we can.”
The Red Devils proudly maintain an extraordinary 88-year tradition of naming at least one academy graduate in every matchday squad, a record unmatched in English football.
Unlike his predecessor, Carrick has matched words with action, actively reinforcing his faith in the academy pathway.
Over the past month, the head coach has been a regular presence at youth fixtures, personally assessing the next wave of talent.
For aspiring youngsters, spotting the first-team manager in the stands provides both motivation and a tangible reminder that opportunity is within reach.
Carrick is well aware of the history of the club. “Youth, Courage, Success” is not merely a slogan, but a philosophy woven into the fabric of the institution.
Those honing their craft at Carrington will feel energised by this renewed commitment from the manager.
