Manchester United Women thrash Atletico Madrid 5-0 on aggregate, face Bayern Munich in UWCL quarter-final
Manchester United Women beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 in the second leg of the Women’s Champions League play-off at Progress with Unity Stadium on Thursday evening, completing a 5-0 aggregate victory.
United won 3-0 in the first leg, but started on the back foot as Phallon Tullis-Joyce was called into action inside the second minute after a well-worked move.
Tullis-Joyce had to be alert again the 10th minute to keep out Synne Jensen’s curling a strike towards the bottom corner.
Moments later, Lauren squandered a chance to give the visitors the lead, heading over from a few yards out.
United then went on the counter, with Lea Schuller firing goalwards, but Lola Gallardo in the Atletico goal palmed it away.
Atleti threatened again, with Jensen latching onto a pass to force Tullis-Joyce to make another save.
Man United broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, after Lisa Naalsund laid the ball off for Julia Zigiotti Olme to fire past Gallardo with a first-time finish.
Jess Park doubled United’s lead before half-time, bending a strike into the far corner from outside the area, leaving Gallardo motionless.
Just after the break, Julia Bartel nearly pulled one back, but Hinata Miyazawa’s deflection sent her strike wide.
Park almost set up United’s third in the 64th minute with a cut-back to Ellen Wangerheim, whose first-time strike was parried over.
Park was then denied by the base of the post after getting teed up by Wangerheim.
Atleti’s Xenia Perez was sent off late on, forcing the visitors to end the game with 10 players.
Man United will now face Bayern Munich in the quarter-final. They will host the first leg on March 24, before traveling to Munich for the second leg on April 1.
