Man Utd now 'weighing up' sensational move for World Cup-winning midfielder
Manchester United are reportedly exploring a move that would send shockwaves across the Premier League landscape.
According to journalist Jeremy Cross, United are weighing up a shock raid on bitter rivals Liverpool for Alexis Mac Allister.
The Old Trafford outfit are reportedly keeping close tabs on the future of the midfielder who won the coveted World Cup and Copa America with Argentina in 2022 and 2024 respectively.
Mac Allister remains under contract at Anfield until 2028, and there has been little indication from Liverpool that they are prepared to entertain offers or extend his deal at this stage.
A direct switch from Anfield to the Theatre of Dreams would represent a sensational, and deeply unpopular, move for the 27-year-old.
Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion in a £55 million deal in 2023 and was instrumental in their Premier League triumph last season.
Deal unlikely to happen
The Red Devils are preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window as they look to reshape the core of their midfield.
Casemiro will depart at the end of the campaign. Manuel Ugarte has failed to impress and could be offloaded.
Considering the prospect of returning to European football next season, United need at least two elite midfielders.
Mac Allister has struggled to find rhythm this season. He has yet to score a goal and has assisted just twice in 25 Premier League games.
Despite the speculation, the likelihood of this deal materialising appears slim for two key reasons.
Firstly, Mac Allister is not a natural defensive midfielder who thrives on relentless ball-winning or shielding the back four.
Kobbie Mainoo arguably requires a technically refined partner who is positionally disciplined and capable of providing consistent defensive balance.
Secondly, direct transfers between Liverpool and United are almost unheard of in the modern era.
Phil Chisnall remains the last player to move directly between the two fierce rivals, a transfer that took place back in 1964.
This speculation could also be driven from the agent of the player in search of a contract extension.
United are believed to be tracking younger profiles such as Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton, and could push to sign two midfielders who better fit their long-term vision.
