Sonny Gray Gushes Over Son’s Viral Moment At Red Sox Spring Training

The Boston Red Sox have only just gotten together for the start of spring training, but the star of the show is clear…

Gunnar Gray.

If you’ve been preoccupied over the last several days, you might have missed the fact that the 11-year-old son of starting pitcher Sonny Gray, went viral for his act of kindness on Sunday. Gunnar Gray, noticing some young fans were looking for an autograph from his father, retrieved an autographed hat and baseball for them, as seen in a video posted to X by Nick Diamond.

“I had seen that before from him. I was in the training room, had thrown a bullpen and I came in. He brought me a hat and a ball and had a couple people’s autographs on it. He said, ‘Hey dad, will you sign this?’ I knew exactly what he was doing,” Sonny Gray said Monday, as transcribed by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.

“… He’s just a good kid. I think he understands the access that he’s granted and the things he’s able to do being the son of a player. As he’s gotten older, he understands the benefits and the perks of that. He’s just got a good heart. Genuinely, he does.

Sonny Gray noted that his wife was the one to share that their son had gone viral, sharing that it was unsurprising given how his son has taken care of others as he has gotten older.

The Red Sox intend on bringing more of a family atmosphere to the team in 2026, with manager Alec Cora calling upon players’ families for motivation during the first official team meeting on Sunday.
