Paul Merson tells Igor Tudor to copy one Arsenal tactic to keep Tottenham up

Igor Tudor has received some advice from the other side of North London, with Paul Merson urging Tottenham to play like Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur’s next game is against Arsenal in the Premier League, and Igor Tudor will be hoping to get off to a good start.

Thomas Frank’s biggest criticism was his pragmatic approach, which Tottenham fans often met with boos as they demanded more front-footed.

With Tudor now in charge, his objective is to steady the ship at Spurs and prevent them from getting relegated.

Tottenham urged to mirror Arsenal approach under Igor Tudor

Speaking to Sky Sports, Paul Merson outlined what he expects from Igor Tudor, focusing on the urgency of results and the shift in style he believes Tottenham Hotspur must adopt.

He said, “You don’t get that much time at so-called big clubs. You have to get results.

“Fans get you the sack. Very rarely does a manager get the sack, and all the fans are cheering your name. It’s panic stations now.

“They had to get someone in who was left-field. They’re coming in for 12 games, and if they keep them up, everyone would say ‘of course they were going to stay up’.

“And if they do not, then I do not know where he [Tudor] goes after this.

“But I do not see them going down. I would be shocked. They have got too many good players. They have got to get organised and keep on nicking points.

“When you come in as a new manager, you can sit ten behind the ball. You can do that against Arsenal next week and the crowd is not going to go mad.

“When you are losing week in, week out, you have to attack because you have to win a football match.

“I watch Tottenham and it is like an end-to-end match. They have got to start playing like Arsenal play – they have got to come from a base and nick a point here.

“It will be interesting what Tudor does. He likes them to work hard – that is an absolute must. That is the norm to work hard and then they will go from there.

“So they will stay up, but they have to get it right next time with the next manager.”

Results over style for Spurs in survival push

While Tudor is currently in charge, the aim is not for an attractive brand of football; it is more about steadying the ship.

The former Juventus man is known for keeping his team compact, as he often deploys a 3-4-2-1 formation. However, he does also like a high-energy, high-press within that shape.

At the moment, Spurs need to get results, with the style of play less important as they run the risk of being relegated.
