Gary Lineker urges Tottenham to appoint their fifth former Chelsea manager

0 13

Gary Lineker believes that a 46-year-old manager could be the right appointment for Tottenham, but he has links to Chelsea.

The big question over the next few days for Tottenham Hotspur is who they will turn to to steer them clear of relegation after Frank’s sacking.

Reports indicate that Spurs are likely to appoint an interim head coach to see them through until the end of the season.

However, some sources are also claiming that Spurs are thinking about appointing Roberto De Zerbi permanently after the Italian parted ways with Marseille.

Tottenham urged to appoint Enzo Marseca

De Zerbi is not the only candidate Tottenham can turn to if they want to appoint a permanent manager, with Enzo Maresca also currently out of contract after being sacked by Chelsea at the start of the year.

Gary Lineker admits he is a big fan of the Italian tactician and suggested that the Lilywhites should be looking closely at him.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, the former Spurs striker said: “Interestingly, for me, someone like (Enzo) Maresca. I mean, if I were Tottenham, I’d very much look at him, even though he is former Chelsea and they don’t like that kind of stuff, the Tottenham fans, possibly.

“If it were me, I would try and get Maresca. I knew him at Leicester; he was a really good coach. (He) did really well, I thought, at Chelsea, for a long time. The first little tricky spell he had, he was fired.”

Ironically, Maresca would be the fifth former Chelsea manager to later coach Tottenham, if he joined. Glenn Hoddle, Andre Villas-Boas, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte have all walked that particular path.

Marseca was previously on Spurs’ radar

Soon after his sacking at Chelsea, it was reported that Marseca is being considered by Tottenham as a potential Frank replacement.

Two weeks ago, a former Spurs official suggested that the former Chelsea man would undoubtedly be on Tottenham’s shortlist if Frank were to be sacked.

However, we have heard very little noise over the last couple of days, suggesting that the 46-year-old could be in line to replace the Dane.
