Not only Mainoo: INEOS must offer new contract to dominant Man Utd star who won 100% duels vs West Ham

Former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has started in each of the five games under caretaker head coach Michael Carrick.

Maguire has been in outstanding form and once again showed his leadership and resilience in the hard-fought 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Tuesday.

Crysencio Summerville appeared to have beaten Diogo Dalot in the 34th minute, but Maguire produced a superb recovery challenge to deny the winger and halt a dangerous attack.

Moments later, concern swept through the United fanbase when Maguire was seen clutching his hamstring following the tackle.

It briefly looked as though the defender would be forced off immediately, but he showed real grit by continuing to battle on for his team before eventually being withdrawn in the 68th minute.

Fantastic display vs West Ham

The England international played a crucial role in limiting the threat posed by the West Ham attackers.

He completed an impressive 96% of his passes, although many were short and sideways to Lisandro Martinez, who was tasked with progressing the ball forward.

Maguire’s strength lies in defending and he excelled in that role. He won all five of his duels, made two tackles and two interceptions, and consistently put his body on the line.

He was not dribbled past even once, despite dealing with Summerville at times.

He could have added his name on the scoresheet but he failed to guide his header on target.

Deserves new contract on one condition

Maguire’s current deal at United expires at the end of June but he is likely to sign a new contract.

Despite the presence of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, United would be wise to offer Maguire a new contract if they secure European football for next season.

The Red Devils already face the need to sign at least two midfielders and a winger, making further heavy spending at centre-back difficult to justify.

Replacing Maguire with an experienced, top-quality defender would likely require a significant fee, which may not represent smart squad planning.

With the defender set to turn 33 next month, playing twice a week across multiple competitions may not be ideal for his recovery and long-term fitness.

A smarter approach could see United rely on Maguire’s experience in the Premier League, while rotating other centre-backs in European fixtures.

The Old Trafford outfit are already in discussions to extend Kobbie Mainoo’s contract and must also open talks over a new deal for Maguire.
