Stefon Diggs Speaks On His Patriots Future After Super Bowl Loss
The New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl 29-13 to the Seattle Seahawks and are now in offseason mode.
Last offseason, the Patriots signed Stefon Diggs to a three-year deal. He was asked whether he would return to the Patriots next season after their embarrassing loss.
“Oh (expletive). Unless they opt out of the contract,” Diggs said, per MassLive’s Mark Daniels. “I anticipate being here, so I hope so. Love my guys. I had a hell of a year playing with them. Built some real family-like bond, so I hope so, I don’t control it though.”
Diggs is under contract, but his cap hit is $26.5 million next season, and his base salary of $20.6 million is not guaranteed. The Patriots could get out of that contract and save plenty of money on the salary cap.
“If the Patriots were to cut him before June 1, they would save $16.8 million off the cap while paying $9.7 million in dead money,” wrote Daniels. “In 2027, his cap number remains the same. That year, they would save $22.5 million by releasing Diggs while paying $4 million in dead money.”
However, Diggs was by far the Patriots’ best receiver last season, despite a quiet Super Bowl. He had 1,013 receiving yards in the regular season, leading the team. He also had four receiving touchdowns. He had just three catches for 37 yards in the Super Bowl.
Diggs reflected on his time in New England this season as well. Even though his contract indicates he will be back, the NFL is a business, and nothing is guaranteed.
“Had a hell of a time in Minnesota, had a hell of a time in Buffalo, had hell of a time in Houston,” Diggs said, per Daniels. “I don’t compare and contrast. You know, comparison is the thief of joy. I had a good time at all those places. Did it work out? No. But I’m happy where I’m at right now and embrace what I got going on here, so I’m just super thankful.”
