Tottenham warned they have a £42.5m player who ‘thinks he is bigger than the club’

0 9

Simon Jordan has taken a dim view of recent comments made by Cristian Romero, arguing that public criticism around Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer approach risks creating problems behind the scenes.

Cristian Romero’s comments about Tottenham’s ‘disgraceful’ lack of options, which came immediately after the winter transfer deadline, split opinion across the football world.

For one, many Tottenham supporters are firmly behind Romero, who continues to align himself with the fanbase and openly questions the club’s hierarchy.

Some of Romero’s Spurs teammates also ‘liked’ the post – although it remains unclear whether they agreed with that particular part of the text.

However, others in the football world are far less convinced by both the substance of the defender’s stance and the manner in which he aired his frustrations.

Cristian Romero criticised by Simon Jordan after Tottenham post

Speaking on talkSPORT, Simon Jordan addressed the wider implications of Romero’s comments, focusing on how they reflect on Tottenham manager Thomas Frank and the culture being fostered at the club.

Jordan suggested the situation undermines Frank’s authority and questioned whether Romero believes he operates above the club, saying on talkSPORT: “It makes life difficult for Thomas Frank because people above him are going to say, do you have control over your players? Not so much what the players think of the manager, but what the people above Thomas Frank think of his control over the players.

“Do you think he does? Well, I think this guy is uncontrollable. I think he does what he wants. So I think he thinks he is bigger than Tottenham Hotspur. I think he thinks he is bigger than his football club.”

The former Crystal Palace owner went on to assess Romero’s performances and behaviour, while making clear how he believes the club should have responded internally, adding: “He is a very good player, do not get me wrong, I like him as a footballer, but I do not think he has set the world on fire. He has made a few headlines recently because he has scored a few goals and he looks like captain invincible with his defensive prowess, but I think he has left a lot to be desired at times.

“This is the culture that is being allowed to be seated in this club. With respect to this player, if I was a senior manager at this club, he would have got one opportunity to say this. He said it two or three weeks ago, talking about people telling lies and only speaking up when it suits them, and he would have been told in no uncertain terms to keep those conversations internal and not use social media or the media to air them.”

Jordan believes Spurs could lose Cristian Romero after public criticism

Following those comments, reports have since emerged suggesting Romero could leave Tottenham this summer, a scenario Jordan believes is entirely plausible.

Expanding on that view, Jordan continued on talkSPORT by questioning whether Romero’s actions constitute leadership and dismissing arguments around mistranslation, saying: “I think the player will leave Tottenham. He tried to leave last year and the deal was not quite there.

“Is it leadership what he is doing? Some were saying this morning that the South American translation was unfortunate rather than disgraceful, but what about the emojis? You cannot mis-translate those. He is saying what he is saying.”

Jordan also framed the issue as part of a broader modern football problem, concluding: “The fact of the matter is that Tottenham Hotspur have a lot of players injured and they have spent a lot of money on players and wages. Football has created this landscape where players genuinely believe they are entitled to say certain things, but questioning ambition publicly is not acceptable. Not publicly. Not publicly.”
